Q. What is Maverick Adventures?
Maverick Adventures designs exceptional lifestyle and adventure travel for adults 20s, 30s and 40s. We travel to the world's coolest destinations, emphasizing very active, inspiring and mind-expanding itineraries. We emphasize a savvy insider's approach to global travel, avoiding mass tourism.
Very importantly, we are the antidote to group travel: bringing together like-minded adventurers who want to travel with a group but feel as if they are simply traveling with friends, who want a professionally planned and superbly executed travel experience but with a spirit of flexibility and spontaneity and who want to see the world's greatest destinations but have an authentic experience.
Maverick Adventures has offices in Los Angeles, California and Rome, Italy.
Please read more about our company on our About Us page

IIf you have any suggestions on specific trip themes, styles or destinations, please send us an email to info@goabbeyroad.com
Q. How big are the groups?
The average group size on all Maverick trips is 10-20 people. Depending on destination and trip style, some trips may be slightly larger or smaller. Our ultimate goal is to give you the impression you are simply traveling with a group of friends ... we strive to balance the benefits and social opportunities a group provides but not make it so large you feel that you are actually in a group! Individuality, flexibility and spontaneity are absolutely allowed and encouraged.
Q. What is the benefit of traveling with Maverick Adventures?
Simply put, you will get a lot more out of your precious vacation time and budget! You benefit from our:
- Expertise on today's coolest destinations, such as emerging hot spots like Croatia and Puglia, dynamic cities like Barcelona and Buenos Aires, über chic ports-of-call like St-Tropez or Capri, natural wonders such as Anguilla and Phuket and food and wine capitals such as Tuscany and Provence
- Extensive and up-to-date "black book" of innovative hotels, locally-praised restaurants, the hippest entertainment venues, as well as the backroads experienced not advertised in mainstream travel guides
- Amazing, unique experiences that are less feasible on your own, such as chartering a boat, dining in a private castle, and much
more
- Professionally researched, planned and coordinated logistics that allow you to relax, focus on fun and soak in nature and culture, rather than the arduous details
- Social opportunities with like-minded adventurers
Q. What are the accommodations like?
Generally, Maverick seeks out smaller but premier, very high quality accommodations. Typically we use four-star boutique hotels, searching for locally-owned, but modern and innovative hotels with great service. In some locations, we may stay in five-star hotels or premier (and carefully chosen) three-star hotels. Other trips may involve accommodations in private villas, vineyard estates or beautiful ranches.
Q. I have special dietary needs. How does Maverick address this?
Our staff will make every reasonable attempt to accommodate dietary needs and restrictions. Please make sure to detail these needs when making your reservation. |
|
Q. What is the typical Maverick guest/adventurer like?
Most Maverick adventurers are educated urban professionals with a thirst to live life to the fullest, experience the world's coolest destinations, and make new friends and social connections. Maverick guests are men and women, from many different backgrounds and a terrific mix of singles, couples and friends. Some Maverick guests are seasoned jet setters while others may just be relatively inexperienced with world travel.
Q. What is the age range of Maverick guests?
Maverick Adventures are designed for adults in their 20s, 30s and 40s. However, we do not restrict any guests who fit the Maverick mold. While the majority of guests are in their late 20s to late 40s, what is most important is attitude and wanting the Maverick style of travel. If you seek an active, social and stylish travel experience, with a spirit of spontaneity and without the stuffiness, you will love Maverick.
Q. How active and strenuous are Maverick trips?
All our trips are active - physically and socially, involving lots of walking, recreational pursuits and social events. Most trips will usually involve optional activities such as water sports, hiking, horseback riding and dancing. Some trips, such as our fitness programs and outdoor and multi-sport adventure tours, will naturally be rooted in a very active, athletic-style itinerary.
But of course, all of our trips are designed to allow flexibility and spontaneity. We strive to always mix it up … taking advantage of the larger group dynamic, breaking down into smaller groups and allowing for individualized time.
Q. Is it easy to connect with others on a Maverick adventure?
Absolutely! The world's coolest destinations, unique experiences and like-minded travel companions - it would be difficult not to form new friends and special bonds. Meeting new people is a highly valued part of the Maverick experience, and one of our primary raison d'être. All you need to do is bring an open mind and adventurous spirit. We may be savvy and sophisticated, but please, leave the attitude behind!
Q. I will be traveling alone. How does it work for rooming?
Almost half our guests are traveling independently. Whether you are solo or coming with friends, you are going to have a fantastic experience. Please see the Rooming Policies section below for more details.
Q. Are groups mostly singles or couples?
Groups are composed of singles, couples and friends. Every trip is different, but it is always a great mix. |

Qs about Rooming Policies |
|
Q. Do you charge a single supplement for solo travelers?
In most cases, we do charge a single supplement for solo travelers who wish to have a single room. If you are a solo traveler (or the odd-person in an odd-numbered group), you can also opt to be matched with another solo guest (of the same gender) and not pay the single supplement. You will make this choice during the reservations process.
Q. Can I request a non-smoking room?
The definition of "non smoking" rooms varies by destination. In some European hotels, for example, "no smoking" rooms is a room that you are not smoking in; however, this could mean that previous guests have smoked in the room. Generally, we cannot guarantee smoke free rooms on all of our trips.
Q. What about other rooming requests?
Specific requests such as adjacent or connecting rooms, bedding requests, rooms with views, etc. should be advised at the time of booking. Every effort will be made to meet your special requests; however, they cannot always be guaranteed. |
Qs about Trip Preparation & Packing |
|
Q. When will I receive my travel documents and more detailed information to start planning?
After you make a reservation, you will receive a Travel Planner which includes a descriptive itinerary and detailed information about arrival and departure, pre- and post-trip hotels, public transportation, packing list, passports and visa requirements and the travel insurance plan.
Q. Do I need to have a visa, passport, or an international driving permit?
As of January 2007, a valid passport is required to travel anywhere outside of the United States, except Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and American territories. A passport is now required to travel to Mexico, Canada, most of the Caribbean and all other foreign countries. For American and Canadian citizens, visas are generally not required for the EU, but are required for some countries such as Australia, Bali, China, Vietnam and Turkey. Your Travel Planner will contain details about required documents.
Guests from countries other than the U.S. should contact the closest consulate for the country to which they are planning to travel to determine if a visa is required for citizens of their country.
All documentation is your responsibility, so please make sure that everything is in order well before your departure.
Q. How can I apply for a passport?
If you are an American citizen or resident, please refer to the:
http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html
If you are not an American citizen or resident, please refer to …
Q. Do I need to speak a foreign language?
It is not necessary. However to maximize any travel experience to any destination, we recommend mastering the basic courtesies such as Hello, Please, Thank You, Good Morning, Where is the bathroom?, May I have …? A little bit of effort from you goes a very long way in establishing bonds with locals that can open doors to better service, helpful advice, cultural insights and perhaps even new friendships. Once you make a reservation, you will receive a Travel Planner, which will include, among many things, a list of basic phrases.
Q. Should I buy trip insurance?
Absolutely, in fact, we strongly recommend all guests purchase travel insurance immediately after booking. We recommend purchasing a solid umbrella plan covering trip delay and cancellation, baggage delay and damage, and medical. For a relatively small fee, you can save yourself a lot of time (and money) down the road. It is easy to purchase travel insurance online, and we recommend starting with InsureMyTrip.com to compare various providers and plans.
Q. What should I pack?
A savvy traveler always packs smart and very light. In fact, for any adventure 14 days or less, we strongly recommend to all guests to only pack carry-on luggage.
For specific recommendations, please check out Maverick's Packing List that will be a part of your Trip's Itinerary & Planner.
For any outdoor-based adventures (e.g. a biking tour), a special packing list will be provided on that tour's web page.
Q. Will there be internet access?
Internet access will vary by destination and accommodation. It will be specified on your Trip Itinerary & Planner under accommodation details. |
|
Q. Are the trips safe?
This is a very important question, and the short answer is yes. However, all guests must be aware that there are inherent dangers and risks associated with travel, especially foreign travel and also adventure travel. We will do our absolute best to warn you of the most obvious risks (which will differ by destination) and how to protect yourself. In the end, however, your safety is predominantly determined by your behavior while traveling.
We encourage guests to review (as we do) the U.S. State Department's travel advisories:
U.S. State Department Travel Advisories
Q. Do I need to have shots, vaccinations or inoculations of any kind for the trip?
To make a well-informed decision, we recommend that you consult the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. You can call the CDC hotline for international travelers at 1-877-FYI-TRIP (1-877-394-8747) or visit the CDC website:
CDC Travel Advisories
Q. What if I have a medical problem while on a trip?
Our staff can assist with locating the nearest pharmacy, arranging doctor or hospital visits.
You will cover your own medical expenses, if any, during the trip and be reimbursed upon your return home by the insurance provider - per the terms of the insurance coverage you purchased. Again, we strongly recommend all guests to purchase travel insurance immediately upon booking any trip, no matter the destination or duration.
If you have a potentially life-threatening medical condition it is essential that you keep us fully informed when filling out the medical form.
Q. Can I take my medication with me? How much?
If you are currently taking medication, be sure to bring an adequate supply that will last you the entire duration of the trip, along with a copy of the original prescription and your doctor's contact information. In some foreign destinations, it may be difficult to obtain a prescription refill.
Q. What if I have special needs?
Whenever possible, Maverick Adventures tries to accommodate guests with special needs. However, the following conditions apply: any physical disability or mental condition that requires special treatment or attention must be reported to Maverick Adventures when the reservation is made; Maverick has the right to refuse or revoke passage / participation to anyone who, in its judgment, is in a physical or mental condition that makes them unfit for travel or who may require care beyond that which Maverick can provide. All guests with disabilities must be self-sufficient and should travel with a guest who will provide any necessary assistance during the trip or in the event of an emergency; and guests who use a wheelchair must provide their own small, collapsible chair and may find certain areas inaccessible. Unfortunately most foreign destinations are not as accessible as cities in the U.S.
If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact us anytime via email or phone.
Please visit our Tours & Events page to get started in selecting your next adventure.
